Adjusting (Sharpen) Filter on the fly

Sorry for my "dumbass"-question: why isn't it possible to change settings of the filters (especially sharpen filter) on the fly without restart. Sitting on a MacPro with VLC 1.0. It would be great if sharpness control (which is IMHO quite essential for optimum playback) would be put to the picture adjust section in advanced control menu to be easier to access (without going to preferences).
