Need help with conversion and pic sequences.

Hi, could anyone give me some pointers?

I need to convert an m2ts video file to an avi, but I'm new to using VLC, any guides or better yet some step by step tips would be very helpfull.

Secondly, I've been having trouble taking screenshots and I want to create a picture sequence but for some reason the snapshot function keeps bombing VLC, I was told that I need to use VLC's Scene video filter output, but I can't find any of these functions anywhere, here are they, how do I do this?

It might not be the answer your looking for but it would be worth while to try the conversion with handbrake, I'm pretty sure it uses vlc code for most of its conversions anyways just takes alot of the command line work out for you.
