How To DISABLE the "Open Recent" feature in VLC?

Postby URGENT! » 16 Jul 2009 08:39

I've searched countless of forums and the net regarding the topic.
There has been a solution using terminal; which doesn't work.
Another solution by 'deleting preferences' which does not actually disable/ remove the feature.

Any solutions? Thanks again :)

Well, the solution I would use if using command line would be something like this
/usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/chflags schg /Users/YOUR_NAME/Library/Preferences/org.videolan.vlc.plist
However, there's already a preference for this in VLC, so the command line is not needed. :)

You can find this setting in VLC's advanced preferences, so click on "All" at the bottom of the Preferences window and navigate to "Interface" -> "Main Interfaces" -> "macosx" and disable the respective setting. A restart of VLC is required for this setting to take affect.

This option does not exist for MS Windows. How to disable the adding of videos to Recent Documents in Windows with VLC v1.0? Classic VLC 0.8x did not do this.

Of course, it exists, it is on the main simple preferences panel. And on the Qt4 interface preferences.

Ok on main simple preferences panel exists "Privacy / Network Interaction" - "Save recently played items". I disable this checkbox and the "Media - Recent Media" menu in VLC goes away.

HOWEVER - Videos played STILL get added to Windows Recent Documents, which is the behavior I cannot disable. VLC 0.86 did not do this.

Is there a preference or setting that will disable videos from adding to the Windows Recent Documents profile (Start Menu... Documents)? If so can you state explicitly the title of this option? Thank you.

You are mistaking everything here.
The Windows Recent Document is a WINDOWS feature, not a VLC feature, that happen when you double-click on a document. The fact that it didn't work for 0.8.6 was a BUG on VLC file registration.

I understand. It's unfortunate I cannot disable this in v1.0 but nonetheless, thanks for the answer.

Open your files from VLC, not from explorer...

Ah, but that's precisely my issue. Thats what I'm doing, and it still adds them as Recent Documents!

I open VLC. Then from within VLC, I open the files. Immediately the file is added to Start Menu - Recent Documents.

That's why I assumed VLC was "notifying" Windows that a video has been opened.

This really does seem to be something that VLC is doing, not windows. If I open a media file in VLC it shows up in the "My Recent Documents". If I open a media file in Windows Media Player it does NOT show up. So its possible to open media files without updating "My Recent Documents".

Thanks,
d

just chiming in to confirm that this is new in the recent version, and that it seems to be behaving differently than other windows apps.
eg:
* open VLC, no content
* drag-and-drop a file from windows explorer into VLC
--> file is added to windows's recent documents menu

in the previous version the file would not be added to the recent docs.

Do you happen to know which version it didn't happen in? Then we could compare the code changes between the two.
