how to convert

Hi just found VLC on a mates say so but think he must have different version.
I am using 1.0.0 but can't convert files, can see the convert/save option and put in the file address of source but then when I give a destination name like clip001.mpg nothing ever happens, ant real numpty user guide available for brand newbies ?
