MJPEG playback is weird

So, I can play this particular mjpeg stream over http fine in firefox and chrome (internet explorer requires a plugin I think). However, when I make vlc play it, it takes many seconds to start, then it plays really fast (I can tell because there is a clock in the video), it screws the colors up (with green and magenta and stuff), then it just stops. I have to hit pause, then play in order to get a couple more frames. Anybody know why? Thanks!
