Problem with forced subtitles plus two bugs

Postby leunamE » 16 May 2009 02:55

Hi!

I have encountered an annoying problem with DVD subtitles in VLC 0.9.9 (and 1.0.0-rc1): In some movies VLC doesn't display forced subtitles - which only appear when someone doesn't speak english. I have recently bought LOTR Extended Trilogy and the two latest films in the trilogy I have to play with english subtitles to get the forced subtitles that are supposed to appear when someone speaks elvish (strangely the first film displays forced subtitles fine). I'm pretty sure this is some kind of bug, but if there is some way around it with preferences please tell me.

Also I'd like to point out two (other) annoying - but not especially serious - bugs: 1. In many DVDs with a warning message before the menu VLC freezes playback in the middle of the message and you have to manually navigate to the root menu to snap out of it. 2. Often when you move from one part of the DVD menu to another or start movie playback from the DVD root menu in fullscreen mode VLC will shrink back to its "normal" size for a fraction of a second before returning to fullscreen and doing what you wanted. Two rather insignificant bugs which nevertheless would be nice to have fixed to the 1.0.0 release.

Aside from that I'm very pleased with VLC. Thank you and keep up the good work.

/Emanuel

I have the same problem with forced subtitles on my copy of The Da Vinci Code. I have to switch on subtitles to see the forced subtitles for those scenes where the characters are speaking French or Latin and it is annoying to have the unnecessary english subtitles on all the time.
If I play the DVD with Windows Media Player, Media Centre, or Media Player Classic then the forced subtitles appear without the need to turn on all subtitles.
There are a number of reasons why I prefer using VLC Media Player and it would be nice if I could find a solution to this particular problem.

This is because forced subtitles are not implemented in the DVD libraries atm:

Thanks for the info DJ.
Tried the link but I get a security certificate error.

Do you know if anyone has plans to fix this?

As with most bugs and even more so with features in VLC, no timetable. If you want it fixed, sending a patch is usually the quickest way. Otherwise, you will just have to see and wait. I will say that this issue has been known since at least 2005.
