Transcoding audio problems

Postby jimbobuk » 02 Dec 2004 02:31

I'm trying to get the best performance possible out of my 30kbyte/s upload capability of my connection.. its obvious that i could do with just a bit more and it'd all look nice..

Anyways i've chosen various video settings.. 128kbit/s or there abouts is about the max i can do with default mpeg4 video encoder when transcoding dvds with widescreen meaning there is much less video to encode..

Anyways ogg is the best sounding audio codec out of those available at the low bitrates i want to use.. the audio shouldn't be THAT significant in the overal stream bandwidth.. however regardless of the bitrates i set the ogg encoder appears to be going off the preferences of the program not in the stream output window.. here you can change the quality in the usual way, however the ogg codec doesn't seem to work with a quality less than 2 i think.. ogg scales down to quality -1 and in this application, something around there would be ideal, you could get nice low rates..

Along with ogg, any codec is helped by being in mono when bitrate causes the codec to choke or require more bits... another problem that i have is that whenever i set the audio transcode to be mono, 1 channel... Video lan client seems to just die when i try to run the stream.. i've had crashes with and without error logs..

Another crash is when i try to set the bitrate for the audio to 16k/s or lower with i think any codec (can't test right now) ... it either crashes or there just is no audio, complete with debug messages ..

So basically could we get really nice ogg encoding, down to quality -1, along with possibilities of using mono if we want.. this would allow me to go a bit higher with the video yet still having nicer sound than the default mpeg audio transcoder.

Thanks for your time... overall though, very happy with everything so far.. i just wish i had 60kbyte/s or more upload... maybe one day.
