How to allow only ONE instance of VLC?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How to allow only ONE instance of VLC?

So when VLC was already started but the old video is finished then the existing VLC program should be taken for playing the next video
and not a new instance of VLC started.

I did not found an option "allow only one instance".

Do you see the search box at the top right corner of every page of these forums ?

Use it, it's very usefull and it will return results like this one:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=56851&start=0&hilit=one+instance
