VLC plugin dosen't work in Safari or Firefox

I have the latest version of MACOSX to date.

I didn't like Quicktime, especially since it could not handle WMV files embedded in some webpages, even with Flip4Mac, so I installed VLC and set it as my default player, then installed the browser plugin.

However, even with the plugin installed Quicktime still takes over the playback of any embedded video. How can I make this plugin work so VLC handles all my video?
