VLC 0.9.9 Deinterlacing Doesn't Work?

Postby deltatux » 15 Apr 2009 00:20

Hey guys,

I just updated my player to 0.9.9 and I realized that none of my videos can be deinterlaced with Blend ... it seems to interlace the video making it worse and no longer smooth looking.

Click the screenshots below to zoom in.

Here's a screenshot from an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place played back in VLC 0.9.9:

Same scene in VLC 0.9.8a:

Obviously as seen here the Blend deinterlace option is broken since it either didn't do a thing or made the image worse. This patch made things worse!

My build where the media is being played:
AMD Phenom II 810
Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 w/ 512MB DDR2 VRAM
320 GB Hitachi P7K500 7200 RPM SATA HDD
500 GB Seagate Barricuda ES.2 7200 RPM SATA HDD
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 SP1 (which isn't much different than Windows Vista except of the branding, the underlying code is identical)

It does this even if I copy the files from my media centre and play it locally.

Media Centre:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+
ASUS Radeon HD 3450 w/ 256MB DDR2 VRAM
500 GB Western Digital Caviar Blue 7200 RPM SATA HDD
1 TB Hitachi 7K1000.B 7200 RPM SATA HDD
Diamond Multimedia TV Wonder 650 USB
Windows Vista Home Premium x64 SP1

Are there any fixes for this issue on 0.9.9?

Thanks,
deltatux

Ok, I can now confirm that this is indeed a Windows version issue since the Mac version doesn't seem to exhibit the same issues.

I just boot my Macbook up and took this screenshot. This is the same scene from Wizard of Waverly Place as the one up top in VLC 0.9.9a.

Can you try 1.0.0 dev versions?

I'm having this same problem, VLC seems to actually be decreasing the quality of the video file. I was watching a show in an older version, then I upgraded my version of VLC and it looks incredibly grainy and pixelated. Though the effect is a biggger difference on mine than the above images, probably because I am watching a lower resolution video. I'm sure the original video quality is better than this is showing.

Is there any binary versions of it? and where do I download them?

I am a technical user, but I'm not sure if I know how to compile on Windows either if compilation is required.

I only know how to compile on UNIX.

Many thanks,

True, developers are so used to own pages they don't see we mortals may not find it. Still, its just few clicks away. Please see links below.

"You'll find the last development version in trunk-xxx directories, while branch-xxx directories contains bugfixes for the last released version."

Ok, I just ran VLC 0.9.10-git (April 15th 2009 build). The deinterlacing I think is fixed on DirectX but it's even worse on OpenGL output (my preferred output):

Plus, I don't know why the video window is separated from the controls unlike the released versions. I guess that's a beta code thing?

EDIT: Same with 1.00pre1-20090414-2205 Goldeneye on OpenGL output:

Seems like no issues in both OpenGL and DirectX in VLC 0.9.8a which is a good thing I guess. I reverted back to 0.9.8a since it's the last version where I haven't found any showstopper bugs like in 0.9.9 and 1.0.0-dev.

EDIT2: VLC 1.00pre1-20090414-2205 Goldeneye + DX3D output seems fine too, I think it may be only OGL, but more testing is required on the DX3D output since I only ran a really short test.

EDIT3: The Mac version on OGL output still works perfectly, so it's definitely a big issue with OGL on Windows.

Oh, so 0.9.9 broke it? By any chance is there a changelog for VLC?

It'll be much easier for me to know what bugs are expected.

I heard that someone reported that DX3D is broken and I'll go test it.

There isn't complete bug/fixes log available. News is the only one, and it doesn't mention most of the issues fixed.

Direct3D works.

olesya: Wrong forum. This VLC related forum. Another option for you is to slipstream SATA drivers to XP install disc or change SATA mode to IDE from BIOS.
