full screen as it was in 0.6.2?

Postby malique » 05 Jan 2004 13:29

Hi

I loved VLC always for one thing: it was the only player to let me watch a video full screen on my main screen and let me do chats and stuff on screen 2 at the same time. In QTime: no chance. whenever you klick, movie stops.

This was the case since 0.6.2 – now when I click the second screen to focus on iCHat or so I get a mnubar and the Dock above the movie. It is still playing but ... aaah.

To enable "always in front" doesn't solve the problem 'cause then it is also in front of even pull-down menus! Nah.

Maybe this is easy to fix? *pleez*

thanks, malique

P.S.: OSX 10.3.2 on a G4/400, 1 Gig

When i reenable the old method, it is not possible to bring windows in front of the video (like the controller).
I prefer the new way, and i don't see this as a bug. it is how it works.
The main screen has the menubar and the dock...

Hi Derk-Jan,

this is for me and people who enjoyed viewing like me a bit sad. It really changes my everyday-viewing experience. I couldn't even change to watch on the second monitor because it has a SLOW PCI card and would bring me like 3 frames/sec.

Wouldn't it be able to add like 2 »stages« of »always in front« as an option? It was there, so I presume (I am NO programmer at all) you would be able to implement this easily w/o having to code it anew at all?

It would add unnecesarry complexity. I understand your problem but i don't think this is the right approach.

 Hum... maybe you have an idea sooner or later how to solve this. I'd appreciate this.

full screen features

Hi Derk-Jan,

I would also be very happy if you could reimplement the old method, perhaps it could be more of a "feature" than "unnecessary"?

Thanx,
Paul

Nice that you mention that problem, malique.
I also miss this specific feature in v0.7.0

I second your request hereby..

why...

I dont understand why anybody would want another window infront of the videodisplay that has been set to fullscreen mode for the reason not to have anything else displayed but the video.

But if there really should happen to be people that want this, why dont you do it like this: If the user has two monitors available he'll want to have the control on the second monitor anyway, so use the old method. If there is only one... well so let it be the new version then. Personaly I totaly agree with Maliques point!!! I find this annoying. Would really appreciate if you could change that.

Great work btw!

v0.7.0: Where's the old fullscreen feature gone?

Postby eld » 06 Jan 2004 00:17

New VLC 0.7.0:
Good to see that others don't like the new fullscreen handling either!

Every little click brings up the dock & menu.
I'd prefer the old style with REAL fullscreen!

I really hope for a switch back to old behaviour in 7.1!!!

I'm just following Apple guidelines here and what we did before was not good, and caused conflicts with other programs. I'm NOT returning to that behaviour, it is simply incorrect.

How many programs do you know that have the behaviour you just described? Probably only a few games, that use a different fullscreen mode (opengl). VLC cannot use OpenGL and forcing the fullscreen window to be as much too the front as described by you people is just not civil. I have had too much trouble with doing 'hacks' to support multiscreen layouts. it's just not worth the trouble to me anymore. It breaks stuff and is BAD.

And now i'm gonna sleep :P

P.S. Get me a multi-monitor setup, so i actually can test what i code, and i might change my mind.

I wonder, I thought you know what you did before? I never had interefering with other programs... worked perfectly here. Anyway, if you ever will have a second monitor you will know what we are asking for...

Let me point out in advance that i dont mean to insult you. It's of course your program and you can do as you like. Actually i like your work. Also note that I'm a programmer as well.

I didn't encounter any conflicts. Would you tell what these were?

> I'm NOT returning to that behaviour, it is simply incorrect.

If you don't like the other behaviour, ok. But what i don't like about this sentence is the phrase 'it's simply incorrect'. Correct is whatever you want it to be. Making it less useable just because some apple guideline tells you not to take over the screen like that is, sorry, stupid.

None, that's why I liked yours!!!

Why? Just because apple sais its like that?I think it's not really desireable to squeeze every app into the usual window environment. Just like games for example.... and fullscreen video playback :)

What kind of trouble was that. We didn't seem to have any trouble with our fullscreen app up to now. Have to admid it doesn't exist that long, and it's opengl. What would be the problem with using OpenGl btw?

Yes, please sleep about it :). Hopefully you'll get a second monitor soon. Unfortunatly I'm not steven jobbs or how this weired guy i named, so i can't toss one into ur direction for fun.

This new way needs to shut down every process in mac os X that could brind an alert or mething similar to the screen

it's impossible to watch a movie without being annoyed with something coming to the screen !

You want to use Apple Guidelines use the same they use for Quicktime player !

Even Apple does not respect their own guidelines !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
