Can't empty playlist

The playlist and media library are empty, but the count at the bottom of the screen says 6 items (which are the contents of a single folder).
When something else is in the playlist and i press skip it will start playing this hidden folder.

I'm currently using 0.9.9a on Mac OS 10.5.6 but the problem has carried over from a previous version of VLC I was using.

Anyone have some ideas on how to remove this folder from the playlist?
