VLC .98a Video Playback problem - works fine in quicktime

Postby basementjack » 07 Mar 2009 06:14

Hey,

VLC is awesome!

I am trying to use it to playback some .mov files.
the 'codec details' section of VLC identifies the video as avc1, and the audio as mp4a.

The video plays back fine in the latest quicktime player on both the Mac and the PC.

In VLC .98 on the mac OSX 10.5.5 and VLC .98a on Windows Vista x64, the video playback appears to stop, then pixelates (like your sattelite tv does when it rains) - audio plays back fine all the way through.

I presume the playback issue is codec related - f thats the case, is it possible to swap out a codec used by Videolan for another one?
Is it possible/feasible to point it to the codec that is used by quicktime?

I realize the simple answer is to 'just play the files in quicktime' however, I have 2 good reasons for wanting to do this in VLC...
I am watching some video tutorials - playlisting is a must have! Also, for a reason unknown to me, quicktime is Dog Slow when loading a file over the network.

I enabled logging and the messaging window...
in it I saw h264 mentioned.
I didn't realize avc1 = h264.

read a few threads on h264 including one saying to set the 'skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding' to All - I tried that and it didn't work for me.

one of the threads mentioned media player classic - so I downloaded 6.4.9.0 of that it it plays back the videos perfectly.

So I again ask for help understanding the codecs in VLC and how to get them configured to match Quicktime and media Player classic!

I appologize if this has been covered here before - I browsed through several screens of posts, and did several searches but did not turn up answers.

- Jack

I can confirm the same problem. I have a Casio EX-F1 camera that records HD video in quicktime h264 format.

I have VLC 0.9.8a, and I can open the .mov files and hear the sound fine, but no video. I've also tried setting the 'skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding' to All, also with no success. I haven't had success playing these files with mplayer either, and it seems from what I've read that it should be possible. I've got an Ubuntu 8.04 machine here.

I'm happy to share a short video, but it appears that attachments are disabled here and I don't know how share it otherwise...

Thanks for any help.

Chris
