pre-caching video?

Sometimes I skip ahead in video but the video doesn't play back immediately. It probably is codec related or video file format related. The time will advance and maybe 10 seconds laer video will appear.

So, if I go 60 seconds into a video, the video might not start playing back till 70 seconds into the video. Is there any way to tell VLC to read in the time from 50 seconds to 60 seconds (caching of sorts) prior to starting 60 seconds in?
