Audio device name in VLC

I'm sure I'm doing something stupid...

Using either
- the audio input on my Osprey 210
- the onboard audio input on my motherboard
I am unable to get any audio out of vlc (v0.9.8a)

When I open a capture device, how do I know what to put in the 'audio device name' field? I've tried loads of different options.

Recorded video files work fine, and I can hear audio from the onboard audio input if I turn up the volume on the gui mixer program.

I thought video was going to be the problem...!
