vlc, rtsp and ffmpeg

How does vlc connect to a rtsp source, example a network camera? Does it use ffmpeg, I have read that vlc uses ffmpeg?
I have got a ACTI network camera, and connect to this camera using vlc, and rtsp, everything works fine.
When i use ffmpeg, it does not work. I get a error saying:
rtsp://Admin:123456@192.168.0.100:7070: Error while parsing header

It's currently using liblive555, not ffmpeg
