Aliasing/interpolation issues when resizing VLC (not OpenGL)

Postby ev1te » 24 Dec 2008 02:49

Recently when I resize the VLC Video window (smaller or larger doesn't matter) something that looks like a mix of "nearest neighbor or Bilinear" interpolation and blocky aliasing appears, this happens for every output module I have tested but OpenGL! This also only happens on my laptop (GeForce 7300 and Vista), on my stationary computer the video is always good.

Is there someone else that have seen this bug and how do I fix it? (VLC have worked fine before, this problem arose sometime after I installed the new VLC version and also updated my GFX drivers etc.)

Reset preferences and cache. Update your graphic driver and try to use DirectX output.

I've tried the newest Nvidia drivers and also some 7 whole version numbers old drivers, no change. Also while having the driver uninstalled and only running VLC with Windows own standard driver the problem is still there... I've treid uninstalling and reinstalling VLC also reset preferences (what is the cache you are talking about?) i haven't tried older versions of VLC yet.

Is there somewhere you can alter the settings of how VLC interpolates the image, which filter to use etc? (Since only OpenGL works it seems like a DirectX problem)

All my other media players have nice images and when I resizing image it is nicely interpolated as usual. In VLC the Video becomes pixelated and blocky when doing a resize.

Edit; reverting to an old VLC version doesn't help ether.

If I only resize the image by a small fraction large boxes similar to compression artifacts appears, if I resize the image more these boxes shrink and when I have 200% zoom they are equal to 2x2 pixels in size, there of the pixelatet image at larger zoom levels.

Of course the built in VLC snapshot feature doesn't work (gives corrupt output images) ether :D

You can use Windows clipboard to do Print Screens, just disable Overlay video output from VLC before doing it.

I have this exact same problem. If I resize a video at all in VLC, even if I make it smaller, the video looks pixelated. This doesn't happen with any other media player for me.

I'm running Windows vista on a pretty good computer, with an ATI Radeon HD 4850, all my drivers are up to date, etc.

How do I fix this? All my VLC settings are the defaults. Under video, the output is set to "default", also the box for "Accelerated Video Output" is checked.

What are the recommended settings?

I just changed the video output from default to direct x, and indeed this does fix the problem, no pixelation now.

Any other settings that are recommended? Should I change the Audio output to Direct X too, for example?

Also, I notice changed the video output to Direct X 3D seems to work just as well as Direct X, what's the difference exactly?

Thanks.

if audio works, then there isn't any reason to change output.

DirectX us DirectDraw to blit the video. Direct X 3D uses Direct3D. DirectX can use Overlay output which should usually be little easier for CPU usage. But under Vista DirectX disables Aero.
