Cannot stream from a URL

Postby Michael Graubart » 16 Dec 2008 13:10

I have just installed VLC 0.9.8 on a Mac G4 (PPC) with OSX 10.4.11. I am obviously being a complete idiot — but for the life of me I cannot get it to play a live audio broadcast (e.g. from a radio station) or a video (e.g. from YouTube). And as a result, of course, I cannot get it to save such audio or video to a folder on my hard disk. I have tried using the Streaming/Exporting wizard and I have tried just inserting a URL into File>Open Network; neither works.

The strange thing is that when I had the previous version of VLC, I did manage this. Either I have forgotten how to do it or something has changed. But v. 0.9.8 works perfectly well on my computer as far as playing existing files is concerned.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You need to choose "Open Network" and then paste the URL into the Media Resource Locator (MRL)

also- you need to select over the UDP:// so it doesn't show when you paste in the URL- or it won't work

Since that didn't work for you, possibly the URL you inserted was incorrect- it does work for me when I insert the
URL for WFMT in Chicago - you might want to try this one and see if it works for you:

http://wttw.ic.llnwd.net/stream/wttw_wfmt_livebroadcast

Thanks so much for that. It works fine now. I realize what I did wrong: I used the bottom option of the three (http:/ftp…) instead of the top one (UDP/RTP). Best wishes for Christmas and New Year.
