http interface how does 'key' command work?

I want to use the http interface and send a keystroke command, for example one that sends the 'c' command to change the cropping.

I tried,

status.xml?command=key&val=c

but this does not work.

Does anyone know the correct form of this command. It's not documented anywhere I can find.
