Image Wall Filter on Fedora Linux not working

Postby Apollo » 13 Nov 2008 07:10

hi all,

i'am a longtime user of vlc player on both linux and windows platform.i'am a big fan of vlc. its a great piece of software.lets one do things that can't be done easily on other proprietary players like subtitles, image wall etc... right now i'am trying to bring up an image wall on Fedora 8 Linux using the latest build of vlc player vlc-0.9.6 but it is not working even though the wall is coming up fine on my Windows Vista machine.

after failing to get it working using the vlc gui settings, I tried the following commands.

./vlc --wall-cols 2 --wall-cols 1 --wall-active 0,1 movie.avi

but i get the following error

[00000817] main filter error: no video filter2 module matched "wall"
[00000806] main video output error: Failed to create video filter2 'wall'
[00000806] main video output error: Failed while trying to append 'wall' to filter chain
[00000806] main video output error: Video filter chain creation failed

i even tried

./vlc --filter-wall --wall-cols 2 --wall-cols 1 --wall-active 0,1 movie.avi

but it said that the --filter-wall option is not recognised.

what could be the problem? the image wall seems to be working well on my Windows machine but the same won't come up on my Linux desktop. pls help!!

Thanks in Advance,
Ap

Ok i found the solution. looks like lot of ppl have hit this Wall(no pun intended) on vlc 0.9.* release. The solution is like this.

Click on Preferences. On the video screen disable "Overlay" option which is checked by default.

And on the Filter Screen there are two parts the top portion is called "Wall Video Filter" and the below one is "Video Output Filter".

Enable Wall option in the below portion i.e., "Video Output Filter" Module.

I'm new to VLC too, so don't take my words for granted, ;) but I think you where missing --vout-filter wall in your command line to enable the wall filter, which you can also accomplish, as you found out, in the Video Preferences. But seems the filter is enabled automatically for Windows.

Also, I wouldn't deactivate overlay, since it gives you much better performance, unless you want to be able to play a video in more than one screen with a single window. You can also do that with the OpenGL output module, though I don't know which way is better for performance. I do know that deactivating overlay won't always work for this, though, depending on your video card.

But back in track: if all you want is a video wall, the wall filter with overlay enabled and a window on each screen would probably work best.
