Transcode to FLV on a server

Hi

I need to be able to transcode from as many formats as possible to flash FLV on a server. I'm building the next youtube ;P

I'm a VLC newbie, so sorry if I should RTFM etc...

Is VLC suitable for this, if not can anyone recommend some decent software to achieve this?
