Default directory

Postby frandav » 30 Oct 2008 18:24

Hi, I'm a very satisfied user of VLC but I have 2 little problems that I haven't been able to fix.
1 - Is there any way to set the default directory for opening a file/directory instead of VLC's directory?
2 - When I create a playlist and save it, the next time I open it, it has added files from the same directory where the files in the playlist are located. I remove those files, save the playlist, and when I open it again, same thing. I delete the playlist file from windows explorer, create a new playlist, same problem.

Thanks in advance

1. No.
2. If you open that playlist with notepad (or any text editor), are those additional files there?

Is there a development wish list or bounty system?

It would be nice if VLC could be set to another default open directory without having to compile to code.

I'll admit to asking this question without poking around too much on the forum yet, apologies if the answer is obvious as I start looking.

The older version of VLC appeared to have this functionality so this was a bit of a surprise after I upgraded.

As in it remembered the directory last visited?

Hate to look a gift horse in the mouth but every time I want to open a file VLC 0.9.6 starts in Windows' stupid My Documents directory. I think this is the first time I've been in that totally useless area of Gate$ garbage since I've owned this computer.

I can find nothing in the Preferences to set either a default directory/drive or to make the program remember the last directory, as did Version 8.6 and as does every other intelligently coded program.

Apparently, no one else can either.

It's a shame such a fine program is hobbled by such petty, intolerable nonsense, and no one connected with it seems to be interested in addressing the problem in this forum or fixing it in the software.

I am not going to constantly click through three or four directories just to open a damned file.

VLC 0.9.6 DELETED until a version is available that allows setting a default directory -- or at least a default drive -- and has sense enough to remember the last directory used.

Memo to developers: Get your heads out of all that unintelligible codex-preference crap and fix this glaring omission needed by average non-geeks who simply want to watch movies on an otherwise much better player than the Windows thing.

You can always use the "Advanced Open File..." option, which is the original Qt4 interface file open. That remembers where you last were, as well as e.g. "Recent Places" from the drop-down box.

Thanks Artie. But this still doesn't seem to work for network shares and there doesn't seem to be an option to navigate to them from this menu, unless I'm missing something?

The menu shows no keyboard-shortcut for Advanced-Open, only CTRL-O for Open.
Wiki search for "Keyboard Shortcuts" finds only how-to-control-during-playback shortcuts.
Preferences -> Interface -> Hotkeys settings is only the control-during-playback hotkeys.
I have been irritated by the loss of remember-last-directory-opened since it was taken away.
