Flash video stops working after using SPDIF in VLC 0.9.3

Postby BartVB » 07 Oct 2008 10:06

After I have used VLC (0.9.3, same with older versions) to play video that uses S/PDIF I'm unable to hear sound in Flash videos. The videos on Youtube start playing (without sound) but stop after 2 seconds, my guess is that they stop because a buffer fills up. The only way to 'fix' this is by restarting the browser (Safari / Firefox).

This has been a problem for quite some time now (as long as I have a digital receiver, approx 1.5 years?) and it's pretty annoying if you have a zillion windows/tabs open in your browser :) I'm a bit surprised that I can't find any bugs or topics related to this?

I'm using a MacBook Pro 2.16, Logitech Z-5400 receiver, have tried this with both 9.x and 10.x Flash versions.

Other people with the same problem? Any known workarounds that don't involve restarting my browser? Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

I have the same problem. It is a bug in the web plugin. VLC takes a lock on the audio device when it outputs SPDIF (so that no other application can output audio). It seems that some things most notably the Flash webplugin become very confused by this. However I have triple checked our usage of the functions, and it's Flash that is not properly detecting the audio device changes and reinitializing.

Thanks for the quick response!

I did some testing and MPlayer also seems to break audio in the Flash player :\ I had a hard time convincing QuickTime Player to output something other than plain stereo to my receiver but when I play:

http://www.diatonis.com/downloads_dts_ac3.html
and then the first file: http://www.diatonis.com/downloads/diato ... iverse.zip

with Quicktime the Flash plugin keeps working. Unfortunately VLC doesn't want to play this file :\

I'm going to see if I can find something that can do 5.1 in both VLC and Quicktime...

But so far it seems that there is a way to use digital output and not break Flash :)

DVD Player (the default one in OS X) also seems to break the Flash Plugin audio playback :\

Created a bug on the adobe site:
