Canon HG10 and Mac OSX (10.5.2)

I have an intel based iMac, Leopard 10.5.2, and an HG10 Canon Hard disk camcorder. I am having no luck in getting the contents of the camera acknowledged by any of my programs. Any thoughts?

The Canon's hard drive volume will only show up on the desktop if it's plugged into a power supply; the camcorder's PC/USB mode will not work on battery. And, only iMovie '08 will recognize the AVCHD video format used by the Canon HG10. I installed iLife '08, then let Software Update grab the various updates that have come out, and then the HG10's video was recognized perfectly.
