VLC for region free DVD watching

Postby ghostrydder » 27 Dec 2007 13:40

Hi everybody,

I've been using VLC as a 'region free' DVD player since I have got a lot of American DVDs. On my iMac VLC works properly but not on
a new Macbook. I always get the error:

cdda: no audio tracks found+
main: no suitable access module available

On both systems Leopard 10.5.1 is installed combined with the newest version of VLC (0.8.6d). Is there any plugin or anything else missing on the Macbook or
why can't the DVDs be played on it?

Thanks, g.

VLC is unable to overcome the region-locking firmware of the DVD drives found in recent Macs. You probably need to flash the existing firmware with a region-free version (see viewtopic.php?f=12&t=39930&p=126350#p126350 for more details), which requires you to know the exact type and maker of your drive, will void your warranty and apparently only works with OS X 10.4 (but Leopard should be OK after flashing).
