Choppy Video Problem

Hiya, I am having a problem with VLC where the video is "choppy". I have tried to make a mock up of the problem in this image:

However, the problem is impossible to capture via print screen or export image. It is VERY apparent to my eyes however.

I am running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, with an XFX 7900GT graphics card and ForceWare drivers version 100.95. I have also tried Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows XP Professional (x86 version), and about 5 different ForceWare driver versions. The problem occurs when using DirectX 3D video or DirectX video output modules. OpenGL works fine, however it almost maxes out my CPU (and in high motion scenes, my CPU just can't cut it).

Is there any way to fix the output of the DirectX modules?

Choppy video could mean it’s the sound card that’s acting up. Try updating your sound card drivers. If the problem still persists, then try a different audio output: Preferences > Audio > Output modules (check the “Advanced options” box), choose “Win32 waveOut extension output”, save and restart VLC.

I just tried with all of the different audio output modules and the video problem was still present the whole time. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Ok, sorry, I didn’t look at the screenshot before posting, I think I see the problem now. Try updating to the latest
DirectX drivers, then startup VLC and go to: preferences > Video and check the box “Overlay video output”.

Hi again. I just updated my DirectX drivers with that link. Then I restarted my computer. I still get the problem when the overlay video output option is checked AND when it is not checked.

Hmm…let me make sure that we’re talking about the same thing: the video has these moving lines that distort the video, is that right? I’ve had this problem before, and it came down to the video drivers, but I’m not so sure if this is the case with your video drivers.

I thought there were later drivers for that video card? I saw it somewhere on this forum, I just don’t remember where.

I'm running Windows XP x64 Edition, these are the latest ForceWare drivers available for this edition. I have tried with the 32-bit edition of Windows XP, and the latest ForceWare drivers for it, but still had the same problem.

On my laptop (7600 mobile graphics card) I have had the same problem and the ONLY drivers that I could get to fix the problem were 97.44 (more up to date drivers have the problem, older drivers have the problem).
