How to install VLC in Linux

Postby laxmanv » 31 Jan 2007 13:24

Hi,
How to install VLC in Linux.
i have tried with rpm source file but failed to due to so many dependency problems. finally i have provided all the libraries which were raised during installation and got the binary i.e wxvlc and vlc .
However, starting the program with "vlc" gives me an almost non-operational skinned GUI that does nothing. Right click on the GUI only produces an error in the shell output saying something about not being able to create the menu and suggesting to install the wxwidgets plugin.
can anybody help me out?

I am using REL4

I am using Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 edition. on top of that i have tried to install vlc-fc4.tar.gz file. because for both REL and fedora this is the only file available to install VLC in Linux.

during installation i used the following commands:
rpm -ivh, rpm -ivh --force, rpm -ivh --nodeps

The following libraries are dependencies which i have downloaded and installed on REL4.
libFLAC.so.7
libSDL_image-1.2.so.0
libdbus-1.so.1
libhal.so.1
libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.4)
libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.6)
libxpcom.so
mozilla >= 1.7.13
libImlib2.so.1
libgcc_s.so.1(GCC_4.0.0)
libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.4)
libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.6)

using --nodeps option and --force option corrupted the my kernel and i had to format the root and reinstalled the os again.
now i don't want to install the above libraries again.
The only alternate what i guess is to install the Fedora core 4.
is this approach is correct or not?
please do the needful.

Thanks and Regards
Laxman
