VideoLan cannot play a MMS:// stream that WMP can

Postby startover » 09 Jan 2007 20:26

I cannot get VideoLan to play a live mms:// stream that windows media player can. For example the following two streams:

(note that these two addresses have DRM and will both expire after being successfully played just once. If you want to test them please try to play with VideoLan first. It will not play and report an access module error. Then you can open it with windows media player and it will play just fine)

Both streams in format like this cannot be played in VideoLan but can be played with Windows Media Player. The error code is:

main debug: thread times: real 0m2.921875s, kernel 0m0.000000s, user 0m0.000000s
main debug: thread 5248 joined (input/input.c:412)
main: nothing to play
access_mms error: error while asking for file -1
access_mms error: error while asking for file -1
access_mms error: cannot connect to server
access_mms error: error: HTTP/1.0 401 Unauthorized
main error: no suitable access module for

One thing I can thikn of is that streams like this have no "file names" just as ".wmv" or ".avi". Could it be that VideoLan has trouble understanding the format of the address?

DRM is not supported. The "individualization" proces which is done in windows media player just isn't there in VLC, this is a requirement in DRM. Sometimes VLC is able to decode but then shows the encrypted (garbled) video..
