Hi,
When I put a lot of music videos in my playlist; videolan eventually hangs and it says I have to quit the program. However the music keeps playing but the video is locked.
The music video files are in hd if that matters.

Generally this is a hardware issue, most noted with nVidia cards or chipsets. Try shutting off "Overlay video output" in preferences, video.
The issue can also be one corrupted file in the playlist. If a second monitor is in use be sure that the Clone and VMR options for your video card are off. The second monitor should be selected within VLC in preferences.
