subwoofer effect is weak

Postby kwokwai » 22 Dec 2006 11:13

Hi, everyone!
I have some mkv files, and they can be played in my
WM Player 10 and VLC 0.85.

But I find that the strength of effect from my subwoofer is weaker when
playing those videos in VLC than doing that in WM Player.
The sound output in VLC is stronger and louder, though!

Could someone here kindly tell me how to
adjust the subwoofer setting in VLC?

Are they multichannel audio (5.1) or stereo?
Audio -> Audio device -> number of speakers, have you set that correctly?

I have a Soundblaster (Creative SB Audigy 4), and a 5.1 stereo.
I just have no idea what the value to enter.
And I can't find the "Number of speakers" by this path:
Audio -> Audio device -> number of speakers
Could you be more specific please?

BTW, adjusting the Equalizer seems not help at all!

I wonder why WM Player supports that strong subwoofer effect, but
VLC doesn't!

TruSurround

TruBass

SRS WOW

when you have Billg media player 9 or newer you can see then how powerful it is, in Bill media player there is option for this called SRS WOW effect. I found this example image from Google:

All of these are considered effects and are licensed. There is no open sourced counterparts, so it is unlikely to be incorporated into VLC. If any or all effects are shut down in WMP the bottom end should be comparable to VLC.

I know that these are licenced but someting similar to these, just a powerful audio plugin for vlc (example name CineVLC) then is possible to forget all other players like Bill media and XMPlay that is very smooth audio player but closed source and only for windows. XMPlay has similar effect feature called Reverb effect.

Perhaps someday comes programmer who is interested writing similar clones to SRS effects.

Audio -> Audio device -> and choose the number of speakers you have (you can only choose 5.1 if the audio source is 5.1).

And SRS TruBass and TruSurround (or something similar) aren't trivial to create. If someone wants to create those filter it would be nice, but it is like hoping miracles.

...
WHich version of VLC are you using?
I just cant find the input textbox for me to enter the number of speakers!
what I can see are only "Stereo" and "Mono" options but no "number of speakers"

choose the number of speakers doesn't mean that there is number of speakers option (so if your sound source is stereo you can only choose stereo). If your sound source ain't 5.1 you can't mirror sound with VLC. You have to use your soundcard control panel (not possible with all cards, Creative's cards work OK).
EDIT:
http://www.diatonis.com/downloads/diato ... c3_48k.zip
download that to test 5.1
