0.8.6 VLC Crashes When Quitting

Hi

Thx for the 0.8.6. update, really love it.

But, everytime I quit VLC, it crashes and I have to Force Quit it.

I'm on Intel Mac and it happens especially with .mkv x264 hdtv movies.

Any way to fix this?

It hasn't happened yet, if I close the video window before quitting VLC.

But it should never crash, right?

It's a big problem when using screen blanking and VLC crashes. If you can't force quit it blindly, you have to hard reset the Mac, not good...

I've been seeing a possibly related issue. I'm running VLC 086 on an iBook G4 under 10.3.9 . If I quit VLC after playing any mpg movie file, I first see the beach ball time waster, then get the MacOS "unexpectedly quite" dlog with option to report to apple or quit. I am able to quit without resorting to force quit.

I've been through both resetting prefs via VLC (then restarting VLC) and also have run the script for deleting prefs (w/o VLC running, then starting up VLC). 085 did not do this on the same system.

I see this with 0.8.6 on 10.3.9 (iBook G3 800), but *only* when I have a .flv movie playing. Doesn't happen with any other movie type I tried (tried 26 different formats).

BTW This also happens when I close the movie window before telling VLC to quit. This is on a completely new VLC install with preferences unchanged from the defaults.

[Edit] After some more testing: It also happens with MPEG-1/2 movies which I didn't bother to test at first, going only through the usually problematic cases like Indeo video (still no show), H.264, exotic early DivX, Video-1 (no show), WMV-9, MS-ADPCM, WMA Audio Voice codec (no show), etc. It does not happen with any other movie types I tried. The exact problem is still there in 0.8.6b. Since the developers don't seem to be interested in fixing it, I gave up and just disabled the Unexpectedly Quit dialog in Mac OS X.

Update:

Just upgraded to QuickTime 7.1.6 and now VLC 0.8.6b opens and plays WITHOUT having to have VLC in the Master Exclude list of Unsanity's Application Enhancer 2.0.3.

Still having the VERY annoying problem – as MANY others seem to be as well – of VLC crashing upon closing/quitting – sometimes it takes several seconds before the crash dialog box comes up, so I don't know if it's REALLY crashing or what?!

I'm running an otherwise good, solid, Mac OS 10.3.9.

On my system (iMac G5 1.8 GHz w/ 1 GB RAM, running 10.3.9) it doesn't matter if either I first close the video window or pause the video or use Cmd-Q or the menu: it _always_ crashes on quit. I already posted my latest crash log to the other message thread (yeah, there's another).

But after setting the verbosity to 2 in VLC prefs and back to 0 after I found nothing helpful in the Console log, it now doesn't crash anymore if I quit before opening any movie (but that's something I only do for testing purposes ).

I thought that the big advantage of open source software was the quick response to bug reports? Or is the Mac platform simply not important enough to the VLC team? And why isn't this listed under known bugs? I kept trying to resolve this myself for a long time because I thought nobody else had this issue and there was something special with my system or setup.

I'm also having this problem. It doesn't matter what type of movie I'm playing, or if I first pause the movie, etc. Whenever I quit, VLC hangs and spins up the CPU until I force-quit. Here is a sample of the hung process, taken from the Activity Monitor:

Using OSX 10.4.9 PPC:

- Drag a file (I used mp4 recorded from mobile) to VLC in dock
- While playing press Command-Q for Quit

-> the computer is busy for a few seconds, then it tells VLC has crashed and asks if you want to send a report to Apple

I'm experiencing the same problem, and it's gotten worse with every new version of VLC
Where can we file proper bugreports, and what is needed in order to fix this problem? Crash logs, debug messages? Anything we can do ourselves to pinpoint the problem?

I'm on a Powermac G5 2x2 GHz, with Mac os 10.4.10 and the latest official VLC. I've tried some nighlies but they are all the same.
I only use VLC for x264 .mkv's and mpeg2 HD in .ts-containers, with digital audio output (DD or DTS). I either quit the movies manually (Apple-Q) or VLC plays them to the end of the file and then tries to quit itself. Both ways of quitting end up getting the beach ball 80 - 90% of the time.
And what's worse, if VLC crashes when in digital audio-mode - in about 20% of those cases all audio goes mute and I have to restart the computer in order to get audio back.

I've been seeing the same crash on Quit with VLC 8.6 on a MBP C2D running 10.4.10.

It only seems to crash when the video I'm watching uses the x264 codec - other codecs like xvid don't cause the crash.

Crashes whether using the keyshortcut or closing the controller window.
It doesn't seem to matter whether the video is playing, paused or has ended (no media window open), it always crashes.

Seen with .mkv, .avi and .mp4 container files, so I guess it's the codec that's the problem... ?

I can post logs if that helps, but I notice other people have done that already.

Open any File (used OGG) by double click to open VLC
Wait til the file plays and press Command-Q

Result: Crash!

Tested this on an iMac 2.16 using 10.4.11, don't think it will behave different on PPC 10.4.10 as 0.8.6c behaved the same. If needed I can test this also.

I'm running MAC OS 10.39 on 3 different computers. On all 3, VLC in all versions crashes frequently, and after playing a video, can't be quit without the beachball and unexpected quit message. I continue to use VLC because it has the best features of any video viewer available on the MAC, but it would be helpful if someone would locate the bug and fix it.

Same here, I only use vlc to see a stream video. If a close first the video window, then de control window and then apple-q it closes properly. But if I quit with apple-q when vlc is searching for the video or doing any other internal work (I assume), I get the beach ball and a crash report.

I know that 10.3.9 is no longer supported, but is there any chance that the fix will be back-ported to 0.8.6c? Given that the problem has affected so many recent versions, I would suspect that the problematic code is not Tiger/Leopard specific and thus it shouldn't be too difficult to update 0.8.6c.

It would be greatly appreciated by me, and no doubt the many other VLC users still on 10.3.9 (even if our numbers are diminishing!).

Yeah, would be nice to have a reliable VLC for older machines which aren't able to run Mac OS X 10.4 and higher.

Since I got access to a 10.3 capable machine again right now, I see what I can do. I possibly need a new harddrive case (firewire 400, oxford bridge) for this though, which I can't afford this month. Mine stopped working a couple of days ago.

Okay, I restored full compatibility for Mac OS X 10.3.9 for 0.8.6's last maintenance release. I'm going to post a link to a preview build here within the next couple of hours.
