Silent VLC 8.5

Postby pixelman » 06 Dec 2006 00:58

Hi

I'm on 10.3.9

I've just downloaded VLC 8.5 and I can't get any audio whatsoever - video seems to be playing flawlessly (seems smoother than VLC8.1), but there is no sound at all, even with files that played OK in VLC 8.1. This silence also applies to audio-only files.

I have twice deleted the Prefs file, but no change. The error message I get is:

"auhal: audio-device var does not exist. device probe failed."

I can't see what settings I might need to change - any help welcome.

cheers

You missed a couple of releases, and therefore also the Notes that usually go with them. Reset your preferences, and visit Audio Midi Setup Utility in your OS. (read the README.MacOSX.rtf file for the full information on how to setup your audio)
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the advice doesn't seem to work for my situation.

I had already used the Prefs Delete app from the download, read the Readme for OSX and opened the Audio/Midi Setup utility app. to see if I could follow the instructions. In my case there are no selectable options other than 'Built-in audio' for both input and output. Audio Output/Configure Speakers is greyed out.

I've also tried deleting the plist file and the VLC Prefs folder by hand - that made no difference either.

All I have is one pair of powered external speakers plugged into the headphone socket, and this machine is a blue-and-white G3 - does that make any difference? My other audio-playing apps still work.

UPDATE: This is weird ... If I run the Preferences Delete app, then launch VLC 8.5 and use the File Open menu item, I DO get sound. As long as I leave VLC open I can drop other files onto the dock icon and they play with sound. If I quit VLC then drag-and-drop the same video file onto the VLC app to launch it, I get NO sound. Thereafter, the File Open method also produces NO sound and the same error message as before ... until I run the Prefs Delete app again and use File/Open ...

cheers

Same Problem: No Audio solved

Postby MacXperte » 11 Dec 2006 01:34

I had the same Problem with 0.8.5 and 0.8.6 (no Sound) on a G3 (Pismo).

VLC was on a volume with permissions disabled. When I moved it to a different volume, where permissions are enabled, it worked.
This must have been introduced lately, as 0.8.2 worked well from the permission-disabled volume.

Should I file a bug? Can you reproduce it or do you need details from the message-log?

I'm having the same problem

The video seems to be playing perfectly, a lot smoother than it has before.

I'm getting the message "cannot create audio output pipeline"

When I open it in Quicktime it's a double image, side by side on the screen and the picture is really bad, colours all over the place but there is sound.

I'm stumped, any help would be appreciated 'cause i've downloaded this file twice thinking it was the file itself.

Leah
