turning filters on and off while playing

I like the new javascript api for vlc but I have one question. Is there anyway you can turn on a filter while playing a video with javascript.

I know you can do it when you add a new file to the playlist but what if the file is already playing. I want to add subpictures or logo while I play something. Or maybe a osd menu.
