Subtitles dissapear when I pause the movie

I'm trying to lern Portuguese from a film but when i pause the film, the subtitles dissapear. Do anyone know how I shall do to make them stay. With iDVD it's no problem but I want to use VLC.

They are suppose to disappear. There is currently a ticket in the Trac system for this to allow them to stay there while paused. You will have to wait and see if someone closes the ticket for 0.8.6 if not at a later build.
