Hardware requirements for doing streaming MPEG4/DVD?

Postby guest » 07 May 2004 00:48

I'm building up a box for some friends that's going to serve as the multi-media centre for their house. They'll pay to have a decent sized HDD put in so they can centrally store all their music in the house, but I'd like to get them running with streamable DVD/Video, so that files on the server can just be streamed out, not moved and played.

What sort of hardware (running Linux on x86) would you need to do realtime decoding and playing (or streaming) of DVDs?

I was hoping a PII-400 with 128Mb could do the trick. Hoping to do this on the cheap :P
