Specifying Audio Source Per Playlist Item

Is it possible to specify an audio source ie *.mp3 or /dev/dsp that changes for different playlist items?

I'm trying to play files that contain audio with files that don't. For the files that don't have audio I'd like to specify an external audio source.

I'd really appreciate any help!
