Playing FLV files from YouTube stops in VLC MP v0.8.5 ...

Postby ant » 19 May 2006 06:05

Hello!

I think there is a FLV playback bug with downloaded FLV files from YouTube (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKD3V9-Q ... ch=edu%20k ). I used http://keepvid.com/lite/ to download YouTube videos. Then, I use VideoLAN Client Media Player v0.8.5 to play these FLV files. Somehow, the player stops playing after about 10-20 seconds in both Windows XP Pro. SP2 (all updates) and Linux (Debian).

Here's Debian's error dump:
vlc
VLC media player 0.8.5-test3 Janus
[00000275] access_file access error: seeking too far
[00000275] access_file access error: seeking too early

Thank you in advance.

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with .flv YouTube files on VLC 0.8.5, using Mac OSX 10.4.6. Some files play fine all the way through; others stop playing within a few seconds each time. This is usually accompanied by the "seeking too early"-type messages.

I had to use v0.8.4b to play these problematic files. :(

A bug fix for the youtube flv problem

Postby kundi11 » 26 Oct 2006 14:32

I have faced similer problem, with downloads from Youtube, VLC seemed to stop in 10 seconds of playing the file,

Solution

There seems to be some sought of memory that vlc keeps of flv files, to beat that, what i did was

1) open the problem file in Free Riva FLV Player 1.2, which can be downloaded for free from http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?downloads&L=3

2) While Riva player playes the file, try to open the same file with VLC, it will show an error, ignore it. and close both the applications.

Next time VLC will play the file in full

I found this by trial and error, any probs mail me at kundi11(at)breakthru(dot)com
VLC Rocks! :D

It is a problem in the FLV format handling in ffmpeg (the tool we use to support many audio/video files)

Thanks for the prompt response!
But Dj, what is the permenent solution? I am used to VLC, and am not comfortable with any other FLV players. Please suggest a patch or bug fix version available?

Thanks!

FLV files are not officially supported yet for VLC. FFmpeg provides this support to VLC. MPlayers newest version also uses FFmpeg and is now working for FLV files so we can only hope later revisions of VLC will also work in this regard. There are no adjustments or work-rounds.

A way out

Postby kundi11 » 30 Oct 2006 04:50

Thanks DJ! I hope VLC does come out with support for FLV soon, they are becoming a preffered medium for people world over.

in the meanwhile, i have found a temporary solution for the problem, the good old conversion techenique, 'Total Video Converter' by iTinySoft is a effective tool. it is simple and fast. Convert 'FLV' to 'AVI' format or many other which suits your needs.

but it is a shareware costing $45.95, a trial version can be downloaded from
http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/

hope it helps VLC users.
I would also suggest, if someone can post any free conversion software for the benifit of those who can't afford a shareware.

I shall keep you posted if i can find any other solutions.
bye for now.

Ya! But seeking and time is still not working. For most files I have little problem with 0.8.5 still may users state they do.

Your wish list can always be be stated in the Feature requests forum. :)

Well, assuming that FLV would work and transcoding were possible with this format you could stream and save the file to something else like mp4. The transcode can be scaled to fit a hand held device if necessary. Most of the material is already sized to fit most devices.

I thought videodownloader was a dead issue???

I tried to stream FLV to the pocket pc it said missing FLV1 codec.
was using TCPMP on the ppc side.
I've tried on ASF Encapsulation method , you suggest I try on MP4 ?

You asked for a response to your feature request. I responded with more things to add to your request. :P

Seems most hand helds will accept an MP4 container, thats mp4v with MP4a (AAC). To the best of my knowledge, at the moment VLC will not transcode FLV at all (into anything).
