AudioLAN

Postby max85 » 12 May 2006 14:57

Hello,

is it also possible to stream only Audio (uncompressed WAV- Files) over VideoLAN? I don`t want to use a codec for my application.

Is there a mechanism to priority my IP/UDP/RTP- Pakets in the my local network? Like DiffServ or another QoS- mechanism?

is it possible to send Emails or start downloads in my LAN during I stream in the network?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

It is possible to stream only audio, but generally not uncompressed. The transport mechanisms generally don't support this. MP3 is extremely common, you won't have any codec problem with it.

Yes, you can priorize your packets using either level 2 or level 3 mechanisms. These are not integrated directly in VLC, and are the responsibility of your OS

As for your last question, it depends on the capacity of your LAN, but audio-only streaming is not ressource-intensive at all (less than 200 kbps per user), so it shouldn't harm your LAN at all. Video is more intensive, it depends on the size of the video of course.
