VLC and Front Row/Apple Remote

Postby PShear » 27 Mar 2006 18:14

Is there any way that VLC can be used with either Apple Front Row or the Apple Remote?

Or are there any integration plans.

We don't have access to such a Mac at the moment, so we can't develop this. Additionally, this functionality is hidden (programming-wise), so I'm not sure if we could get this work stably.

Apple Remote wrapper class

Postby VaderPi » 28 Mar 2006 05:31

An Apple Remote wrapper class has been developed. I would add support for it myself, but I am unsure where to start. At the very least, I am willing to test this. I have a MacBook Pro.

I modified the source a rebuilt, adding some VLC applescripting...
download here: http://rapidshare.de/files/16609113/App ... r.zip.html
not quite built-in support, but works for me.

Controls:
Press Play and Hold: Opens VLC (if not open)
Play: Play/Pause
Foward: Next track
Backward: Previous track
Menu: toggle fullscreen/Windowed
Volume +: Volume Up
Volume -: Volume Down

just open the app, and click the button to start listening.

VLC and Front Row/Apple Remote

Postby PShear » 28 Mar 2006 18:47

Jake

Downloaded Apple Remote Helper and it does precisely what you say!

This is a great help and allows me to control shows through VLC once they are started. Obviously I still need to start VLC and select the media source before sitting down and vegging out but this is 7/10ths of the functionality I wanted.

Thanks for the great app.

Is it possible to integrate another app into Front Row other than the iLife products??

into iLife? I don't think so...as far as I know, that would require getting some iLife source code, so that doesn't sound likely. I'm sure someone better at making apps could make a front-row-esque interface that uses the remote and controls mplayer/VLC. I can certainly try and do some of that (ie. list your HD and let you navigate the remote, opening the selection in VLC...). I'll keep the board posted.

Not being funny, if you want integration into FrontRow, isn't it better to just get all your content playable with QT?

I've had some success using VLC to transcode files that QT has trouble with the the audio.

My intel mini arrives tomorrow and it won't have a keyboard or mouse - just plugged in to TV - so I certainly don't want to have to use VNC to connect to it to start VLC.

it really does the job and it is quite helpful. Thanks for the app !

QT is not a solution

No. QT doesn't support DD or DTS which makes it a horrible solution. Sure would be nice if VLC was part of a frontend app.
