Sudden Video Choppyness

Postby BoomShake007 » 12 Mar 2006 23:32

Computer Info:
AMD Athlon64 3700+ (2.2GHz)
ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 mobo
1GB DDR400 ram
ATI 9600XT 256MB video card
VLC version 0.8.4a (latest)

Video Info:
codec: XVID
Framerate: 23.9
audio: mpga

Up until this afternoon, video playback was great. Smooth as can be. However, this afternoo, video playback became somewhat choppy. Every so often, it'll freeze and it seems to skip ahead a few frames. I have tried disabling the frame skipping in video settings, but it didn't help. I tried a reinstallation, but it didn't help. No other setting was changed prior to this problem. Here's message output for a little bit. I paused the video shortly after a skip. Skips seem to coincide with the "bad_data_begin" pointer. I know the video is fine, I watched it yesterday. It's playing off a data type DVD. The problem still happens even for files on the hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferences, Video, Under "General video settings" uncheck the box marked "Skip frames" then press "Save" and close the player.

If this does not help then try to erase the preferences directory. C:\Documents and Settings\Owner (this is you)\Application Data\VLC Erase VLC, Application Data is a hidden directory so you will need to make it visible.

If this still does not do the trick, then there is something about the system that has changed.

I did notice you were using a deinterlace filter, are you having the same problem without the filter?

Same Problem

I have the same problem, but different. Mine applies only to specific files in a series, though the ones before it are perfectly fine.
The proposed fix of Skip frames doesn't work.
I didn't know about the output feature (vew>messages)... well now i do!
Anyway here's the output i got with the skipping.

I guess it might be a problem related to the file. It is using divx5.2.1 in a .mkv package.
though files with divx5.2.0 seem to work fine.

oh well, just wanted to share that information in case it is of relevance.

You are similar to me and the only problem I have had after SP2 was updating the sound and video drivers which Microsoft recommends. Also it would be smart to get current with DirectX. The last runtime update was Feb 06 and is not automatic nor does the Version change from 9c.
