2.1> speaker issue /w vlc 0.6.2 on 2.6.3-gentoo-r1 linux

I've installed vlc 0.6.2 on my linux box (2.6.3-gentoo-r1) but only the 2 front speaker and the lfe seems to be working.

I've checked the system using the alsa speaker-test utility and it seems that all my speakers are working okay.

I guess the first thing I should do is upgrade vlc but gentoo doesn't have 0.7.1 ready... But according to http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/NEWS , I believe my problem shouldn't matter...

Relevant VLC configuration are as follows:
Settings -> Audio -> Audio output module; alsa
Audio -> Device; 5.1

Is there any settings that I am missing out? I am using Hercules Digifire 7.1 sound card.

Okay, I tested another application xine v0.9.22 (xine library 1.0.0 rc1). I think the DD5.1 is working fine with this application. But I still like to use vlc b/c I think the load is lighter than xine.

Audio -> Device always starts in Stereo. I've got the last 2 messege when I changed it to 5.1 .

BTW, since video playback was clumsy, I thought that enabling frame buffer would help so I enabled it following the direction at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php? ... =xdirectfb .
And I think I'll recompile (re-emerge in gentoo terms) vlc because I have framebuffer support. I believe it means I can use vlc w/o X, right? But I guess it shouldn't change my present problem.
