Transcoding and mux

Hi all, i found out how to stream from my computer at home to my computer at work, but now i wonder if it is better to transcode (and which codec is better to use) and which encapsulation method is better to use.
Unfortunately i can't use VLC from work (VLC doesn't know how to go on internet ) so i have to use Windows Media Player and for the moment i have a choppy video incoming, but i still don't understand if it is cause of my network or other reasons.
If you have already discussed about it, i'd apreciate if you let me know the post
