Blu-ray menus failed - Issue other than Java :-/

Postby FTP » 03 Dec 2024 17:58

Hi,

I face an issue for which I can't find any answer on Google.

My VLC (64 bits on Windows 10, with Java JRE 8 U431 installed) successfully read most of my Blu-ray disk menus.
Except... 2, Kill Bill 1 & 2, where I get this error message:

Problem, when I search on Google regarding VLC having problems reading Blu-ray menus, I only find issues related to Java.
But I think my setup is working fine with Java. All my other Blu-rays have data in the \BDJO\ and \JAR\ directories, so they must use Java and VLC can read their menus.
VLC is also not saying in the error message, the issue is related to Java.

On the other hand, the specificity of those Kill Bill 1 & 2 Blu-rays is that they have their \BDJO\ and \JAR\ sub-directories empty!
So they "maybe" don't use Java for their menus.

After searching on Google, I think I found it exists at least one (maybe more) alterative to Java for Blu-ray menus: IGS menus (Interactive Graphics Stream).
https://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-152952.html

So -maybe- those 2 Blu-rays are using IGS menus and -maybe- VLC has some difficulties reading some Blu-rays with IGS menus.
And I say "some" because I found a 3rd Blu-ray with its \BDJO\ and \JAR\ sub-directories empty, but this time VLC can read its menus.
So if there's an issue with IGS menus, then it's not with all disks using this type of menus.

So here are my questions:
- What are the technologies for Blu-ray menus? Java for sure. IGS? Any thing else?
- And does VLC have known issue with Blu-ray disks not using Java, using IGS menus? Anything to know, known fix, workaround or procedure to fine tune VLC's installation and read those disk menus?

Thanks for your help! :)

P.S.: also FYI, other than the menus, the 2 disks work fine. VLC can read the movies if I tick "No disk menus"

You should create a new report ticket on the VLC issues tracker with your above report and the link to this thread:
