Potentially dangerous bug

I purchased a new Sony Bravia 4K VH21 TV with Android TV OS 10. I installed on it, VLC for Android 3.5.4. Plugging in two external drives to the USB ports, it began updating the libraries. It never seemed to finish this task, and the rotating progress indicator remained for days.

The TV became sluggish and unresponsive. Eventually it went into a boot-loop and had to be returned to the store. The replacement is identical, but this time, I attached each drive separately, waiting for the progress indicator to stop before attaching the second drive. In that case, everything worked properly for several weeks.

Recently, I updated some content on the drives, so I reattached them, and the never-ending progress indicator returned. It has been going all day. I am concerned that it may disable my TV, so I uninstalled VLC, and reinstalled it to the same result. Is there a solution to make the indicator stop?

You can't go to settings, apps, force stop and then clear cache and data to kill it?
