VLC on Windows crashes if non-admin tries to open UPnP source.

Postby Charlweed » 19 Nov 2023 03:24

This crash occurs every time, and has occurred for many versions previous to 3.0. There is no message at all, VLC just closes. The obvious work-around works: If VLC is launched as an administrator (via the stupid UAC dialog), or is run by a user with administrative privileges, VLC opens UPnP sources as expected. But I just installed VLC 3.0 on Windows 10, and I was hoping that UpNP would no longer be an issue for non-administrators, but alas, no. I tried searching for this bug on code.videolan.org, and I was surprised not to find it. I'll file a report if this is genuinely unknown.
So why does it CRASH? And why does it fail at all?

The UPnP server is miniDLNA 1.3 on Linux. I only see this issue on Windows non-admins. VLC on Linux, Mac, and iOS access this server as expected. The crash happens as soon as the server is selected as a "Title" from the Local Network/Universal Plug 'n Play dialog.

Please run VLC from the command prompt with this command line for creating a log file:

Code: Select all

C:\path\to\vlc\vlc.exe --extraintf=logger --verbose=2 --logfile=C:\temp\vlc.log --logmode=text --file-logging

and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.

The destination folder must already exist and make sure that you have full access rights to it.
