2 simultaneous videos

I need to play / compare 2 videos more or less simultaneously. We're looking for glitches and quality problems in different
post processing runs.

I've tried the various methods people have used (& I'm pretty sure I was able to do this in some old version of VLC, maybe 5+ yrs ago).
For example here:

what happens?
First, nothing happens. Black window.
Then mess around with the start/stop/pause buttons, & eventually video #1 plays. Video #2, never.
VLC = 3.0.18 Vetinari

How do I get this to work? Thanks, ==mwh
