Show Title from Playlist Instead of MP3 Metadata

Is it possible to have VLC read the title from the playlist instead of the MP3 metadata?

I have tried:
1. tools -> preferences -> all (at bottom) -> Playlist -> uncheck "automatically preparse items"

With this approach, the current mp3 still shows the title from the MP3 metadata but the other MP3s in the playlist show the title from the playlist. When I select the next mp3, VLC reverts to the MP3 meta data. Also, VLC doesn’t show the playlist length which I like to know.

2. tools -> preferences -> all -> input/codecs: title metadata=$N

With this approach, I didn’t notice a change in VLC.

I found an old post where someone wanted to show the file name instead of the MP3 metadata tile but it didn’t seem to get resolved.

I’m running VLC 3.0.19 on Rocky Linux 9.2.

Menu Tools -> Preferences (Show Settings=ALL) -> Input/Codecs
Then on the right panel scroll down to "Change title according to current media" and set it to "$F" (without quotes, case sensitive).

Save, exit and restart VLC.

When I said "title" I meant the title shown in the list of mp3s in the playlist pane. This is the central pane that has the columns title, duration and album by defaul, and each row is one mp3 in the playlist. For example, the next mp3 may have the title in the playlist "episode 10: Jon Smith discussions top 10 tips to VLC" and the mp3 has the title embedded as "smith final". With "automatically preparse items" then the title is shown as "episode 10: Jon Smith discussions top 10 tips to VLC" but when I start to play this mp3, the title reverts back to "smith final". I don't like disabling "the automatically preparse items" options since VLC doesn't show the total play time.

It seems the "Change title according to current media" is the title at the very top of the window for the currently played mp3. Also, $F shows the file name.

Try with $t (not $T, case sensitive).

I'm not sure where you are suggesting adding $t. I added to "Change title according to current media" and "title metadata", and got the same results where the title from the mp3 is being displayed for the current playing mp3 and not the title from the playlist

Previously, I thought I restarted vlc. But when I started again, I got $t in the VLC title and in the playlist panel
