Apple TV starts playing the first video when selecting a folder

I have a local FTP server with videos sorted into directories. Accessing it used to work fine where I could browse the dirs and select which video I wanted. Something changed at some point and now as soon as I choose the root dir, it automatically goes into the first subdir and starts playing the first video. I have no method of choosing which video to play at all, my only option is to fast forward to get to the next alphabetically listed video. Nothing changed on the FTP server except that I changed the password once. I connected to the FTP server on another computer and saw that it behaved normally. I tried uninstalling the VLC app from the Apple TV and reinstalling it which didn't help. I also tried deleting the saved FTP profile in the VLC app which also didn't help. I went looking through all the settings and didn't find anything relevant. I'm a good boy and did my googling before desperately making an account here I love VLC and would love to have it be useful again on my parents' Apple TV. Any help anyone can provide is much appreciated!
