VLC can't open DVD

Odd problem. DVD from public library - can't open the movie disc, special features disc ok.
No problems with other DVDs (except hopelessly damaged ones).
vlc pulses yellow on the movie progress band at the lower side of its window.

Tried to log to logfile - nothing shows up, VLC appears to be hanging at the start.

Handbrake can scan it - I was able to pull the movie off to watch it with handbrake.

What's going on here?

I figured out a solution, not entirely sure why it works
open disc menu, check "no disc menus"
select play
main movie plays

I found this in a suggestion to solve another problem.
I don't think I would ever have discovered this if I hadn't been overly persistent, and lucky.
It's not quite right, & there may be an element of chance or another kind of luck:
there are other features on this disc that are invisible to VLC (not to handbrake), this
was only successful in playing the main feature. Fortunate, that.
