Subtitles not working when using external devices

I can't seem to get subtitles to work with VLC using external drives (usb etc). Everything works fine if I pull the video file and the .srt file to the device and name them the same. I just can't get it to work externally. Thanks for any help

Even if you manually open the subtitle file through the Subtitles menu ?

Nothing shows up under the subtitles menu when I have the subtitles .srt file on an external drive.
